Probiotics for Kids – Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis (DSM 15954)

By Demi Sumler

The probiotic strain Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis DSM 15954 is the world’s most documented probiotic Bifidobacterium. It is discussed in more than 300 scientific publications, of which more than 130 are publications of clinical studies on humans performed over 35 years of study. It is genetically identical to Bb-12 by Chr. Hansen.

As a beneficial probiotic, DSM 15954 has strong mucus adherence qualities, bile salt hydrolase, and great gastric acid and bile tolerance. Mechanisms for B. lactis include pathogen inhibition, improving barrier function, and immune interactions.

Constipation and Healthy Bowel Function

Clinical trials have indicated that B. lactis can survive in the gastrointestinal tract and that it can help maintain a balanced microbiota. DSM 15954 has also been demonstrated to enhance bowel function, protect against acute diarrhea, and lessen the negative effects of antibiotic therapy, including drug-associated diarrhea. A significant increase in stool frequency/bowel movement was observed as a result of this probiotic’s ability to relieve constipation, which is a common disorder among children1.

Immunity

When it comes to immune function, studies have revealed that DSM 15954 improves the body’s defenses against typical respiratory infections and lowers the frequency of acute respiratory tract infections. Some studies showed B. lactis supplementation could lead to a reduction in atopic eczema in kids. However, probiotics are still controversial when it comes to their effectiveness in preventing the onset of atopic eczema.

Synergy in Action

While single-strain probiotics are good for your health, multi-strain probiotics may be even more beneficial due to the synergistic effects between the various strains. Both Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and DSM 15954 probiotic strains enhanced each other’s adhesion, mainly in large intestinal mucus while synergistically enhancing pathogen inhibition. Supplementation of both strains could help relieve digestive issues (diarrhea, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome), colic and modulate immune responses against infections in kids.
